When he accepted a gift of a $2000 dog, turning his back on the millions of suffering dogs he pledged to help, advocates were shocked and angered, knowing that for every dog purchased from a breeder, a shelter dog loses his chance to find a “forever home,” and is sentenced to death.
The President and Vice-President (who bought a dog from a puppy mill last fall) have fueled the dog breeding industry, ensuring puppy mills will prosper and millions more homeless pets will be euthanized, costing taxpayers BILLIONS. Mr. Obama says America condemns torture, yet puppy mills, overseen by the USDA, are nothing short of legalized torture. Urge him to set a humane example by adopting, creating a win-win: Millions of Americans will be inspired to adopt, emptying the shelters, saving the U.S. billions of dollars, and Bo will have a friend.
Please tell the President that this simple act will go a long way toward undoing the damage he and the VP have done to the adoption and anti-puppy mill movement.

"Elite Animals" in W. Hollywood and "Puppy and Me" in Sherman Oaks get their Dogs from Puppy Mills!
Ongoing protests are being held every Saturday from 2-4 at Elite Animals, 8729 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood (Parking at 901 Hancock: 1 hour free, 75 cents ea. 30 min after or meter parking- NY film crew will be there Sat., June 20th), and some Thursdays 1-3 and Saturdays 1-4 at Puppy and Me, 13753 Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks (email jkrause@bestfriends.org, cc: tiffanih@bestfriends.org to confirm). You can also contact me to find out where puppy mill protests will be held in the area on any given weekend.
Despite protests that began May 2nd after an undercover investigation of the puppy mill that supplies them, Elite Animals in West Hollywood has so far refused to go humane. On May 12th, a meeting was held at city hall in West Hollywood where the owner of the store, Isabella Stroshnoy, had a civil discussion mediated by a representative of the city with members of the humane community from The Companion Animal Protection Society, The Animal Legal Defense Fund, In Defense of Animals, Best Friends Animal Society, The Amanda Foundation and Strangest Angels Animal Rescue. Please see more details about the meeting in this article by Carole Raphaelle Davis at Wuffington Wag. In summary, Carole Raphaelle Davis, West Coast Director of The Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS) presented evidence from the organization's undercover investigation of the puppy mill in Melrose, MN. Graphic photos of neglect and cruelty were shown, along with reports from a consumer watchdog group called Pet Shop Puppies documenting sick and dying dogs bought from pet stores supplied by this mill, and proof of multiple incidents of the mill's non-compliance with the USDA. The 2008 Farm Bill made it illegal to import dogs under 6 months of age to the United States, but Elite Animals has been offering puppies only weeks old sent here from Russia. Elite Animals has been defrauding their customers by telling them the dogs were raised "in a house", not from a puppy mill, and have violated the CA "Puppy Lemon" law by not posting a consumers’ notice sign regarding the source of the dogs and vet treatment administered near the cages of dogs offered for sale as is required by CA Health & Safety Code §§ 122220, 122150 (see here). The store agreed to cease and desist buying dogs for now, so CAPS canceled that weekend's protest. But Elite Animals has since not shown any progress in moving towards doing business humanely, despite The Amanda Foundation agreeing to talks about teaming up to offer their rescues through the store. I think they realize we're not going away until they go humane, but our best bet might be a new proposed ordinance by the city of West Hollywood, who already passed a resolution last year banning the sale of puppy mill dogs, but The Animal Legal Defense Fund will help them draft an enforceable ordinance against businesses supporting puppy mills. Meet Stu- A Dog Wrongly Imprisoned For Four Years By The City of Los Angeles
Stu with his angel and my friend, Marie Atake of Forte Animal Rescue. Marie is a former Animal Services Board Commissioner who admirably gave up her position in her frustrating and heartbreaking fight for justice for Stu.
I have known Stu for years, and have spent all that time pleading for his freedom. When I first met him, he was in isolation at the North Central Shelter where this social animal had spent years, forbidden to be taken on walks. I knew this dog was not in the least bit "dangerous", as he had been labeled by the city. I soon learned of the many political missteps in what turns out to be a personal vendetta against Stu's guardian, Jeff, starting with the "victim", who waited a full month to report the two bites she received from Stu while he was in her care after being injured in a fight with another dog. The "victim" had the injured Stu in a corner and was putting a harness over his torn ear and he bit her twice on the arm out of pain/fear. This woman hired a savvy lawyer and sued for millions, making up an elaborate story of being dragged across the floor. Jeff's homeowner insurance paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars to her. Her greed condemned this dog to death. Working in animal rescue, I have been unfortunate enough to recieve dog bites from scared and injured dogs. I would never in a million years think of condemning any of these dogs for being dogs, using their natural instincts, which is ALL they have.
Experts found Stu to NOT be dangerous, but this evidence was not allowed at his hearing. The personal vendetta continued with an animal services board commissioner contacting Jeff before his hearing (against the rules) and making her own personal judgment about him, then sharing those feelings with other commissioners. The disturbing trend continues and includes L.A. Animal Services' soon-departing General Manager, Ed Boks and the Deputy City Attorneys, Dov Lesel and Todd Leung, who one would suspect might have something to do with canceling the latest meeting, and the last one before Stu's final hearing on June 18th (a decision from that is being awaited as this newsletter is being published), of the Board of Animal Commissioners, who were planning on voting on sending a recommendation to dismiss the case because Stu was not given due process and there is little chance of a fair trial at this point. Jeff has made enemies, but this man and his dog have had no justice. Stu's outcome will be decided very soon.

These are OUR tax dollars being spent for years to keep this now geriatric dog incarcerated, and I want everyone to know what some of our public servants are spending their time doing. I have seen much of this travesty unfold, and I can tell you that Stu is an innocent dog paying for human pettiness. Stu is an old dog now, having spent a third of his life away from home, in isolation. He deserves to live out what little time he has left at home with the one that loves him and has spent years fighting and going broke for justice for this dog. Stu is still forbidden to go on walks, though his quarters are a bit more desirable, thanks to the generosity of Bobby Dorafshar of New Leash on Life and K9s Only. Bobby is a world-renowned trainer and another expert that deemed Stu NOT dangerous.
I am thankful that we have a new city attorney coming into office soon, Carmen Trutanich, who is known to have compassion towards animals, and I hope will clear up this black mark on our city. I just hope Trutanich's swearing-in on July 1st is not too late for Stu.

5 Free Fun Things to Do with Your Dog this Summer from Dogster

Take 5 with Dogster HQ - Our Pup Staycation Tips!
Have no fear! This is not a bad thing, my furry friends - it's a chance to once again focus on the little things we really love about our pets and thoroughly enjoy the friendship, fun and comfort that our best friends provide.
So we sat down today at Dogster HQ and came up with five simple
things that you can do for your dog this summer when you both feel like
it's time for a little break. And the best thing about all five is the
price tag: FREE!
Here's our list:
#1. Brush it out. Not only do most dogs enjoy being brushed, but they of course need it as well. Getting out tangles in long-haired dogs will please the both of you, while short-haired dogs benefit from the massage and cleaning aspects that a good brushing provides. Brushing can also prove to be therapeutic for you as well. The rhythmic motions and the soothing nature of the actions can prove to be just the kind of relaxing break you deserve.
#2. Be a visitor. Why not take your dog to a place where people can't or don't own dogs? There's nothing more satisfying than seeing senior citizens or hospitalized individuals light up at the sight of a dog. Studies have shown, as well, that the therapeutic benefits of canine contact are many, so while your dog has fun meeting new people and the new people enjoy petting your dog, you will feel great about lending a helping hand.
#3. Take a nap! Let's face it - how often have you looked over at your pooch, sleeping on the couch or curled up under a tree and thought, "Oh, how I wish I was doing that right now..." ? Well, what are you waiting for? Curling up next to your dog on the sofa or (if he or she is allowed) on the bed, is something that both of you will benefit from. Your dog will appreciate your proximity and you will love the time-out. And don't forget - dogs are pretty darned good at sleeping - you could learn a few things from yours!
#4. Make a play date. Don't just play with your dog... PLAY with your dog! Set aside an uninterrupted time when you can really get down, get dirty and play with your dog. Tossing a ball and walking around the block are also great activities, but your dog will love it if you get down on your hands and knees so that you can really have fun with each other. Being down on your dog's level will not only reinforce your friendly relationship, but it will remind you of what it's actually like to be down there all the time! If you can't get down on your dog's level, find a neighborhood kid or a nearby family member who can. Your dog will thank you for it!
#5. Park it. Even if this is something that you already are in the habit of doing, it's worth bringing up and worth trying to do even more of this summer. The bottom line on this one is: dogs LOVE parks. It's great to get out to a place where the sights and smells are new and exciting, and a dog can run his or her little heart out. If you live in the country, you LIVE in a park, of course, so this is just a reminder to get out there and have fun!
#6. Shut it down. Hey wait a minute... you said FIVE things!
Well, #6 is not technically on the list, but the five things above
aren't possible unless you start with #6... Turn off the PC, power down
the laptop, walk slowly (but surely) away from the Mac. Believe me,
this is gonna hurt us more than it does you... ;-) As much as
we love the Internets, and as much as we love Dogster, AND as much as
we know that you do, too - getting a little one-on-one time with your
BFF is best accomplished offline.

It was a pleasure to take part in Councilmember Cárdenas' Pet Care Fair again this year. Lots of animals were spayed and neutered by The Amanda Foundation, microchips were implanted at no charge by the city, and some lucky animals found their forever homes. What more could you ask for?
My highlight was massaging and falling in love with Cesar Millan's dog, Daddy.

I want to thank Katie Ryan of Whole Foods for having Buddha Dog back for a second year of Pet Appreciation. I had a great time massaging dogs and talking with people. The Ozzy Foundation's 2nd Annual Legendary Bingo @ Hamburger Mary's
A blast was had by all at Legendary Bingo on June 10th. Proceeds went to a nonprofit that I am proud to serve on the Advisory Board for. The Ozzy Foundation helps pet guardians with the financial costs of veterinarian bills and provides a supportive place for those caring for a chronically-ill pet.

- "Doggy and Me" Massages are available and make a great gift! Gift Certificates and Prepayment here with Paypal.
- Half-price massage sessions are available to all newly-adopted animals within six months of adoption from a shelter or rescue group. Massage, combined with TTouch, Acupressure, and Reiki can be a powerful tool in helping an animal's transition into a new home.
- Referral Rewards (a complimentary massage session) are offered to any client referring a new client!
- Group discounts are extended with a $10 per additional animal discount at the same location during the same visit. The first massage will be regular price, and discounts apply to each additional session in the same visit.
- I am finally trying to organize the LINKS page on the website, and adding a directory. It has not been easy to navigate after years of collecting my favorite links. The directory is not quite finished, but completion is on the horizon! I will be combining the Pet Marketplace Links and the Links page by the time I am finished.

The AFFORDABLE CAT FENCE provides effective and humane cat containment by turning your yard into a secure enclosure.
