California's Compassion for Puppy Mill Dogs has Been Terminated by our Governor!

buddhadog Posted by buddhadog at 01:28 AM on October 17, 2009 Comments comments (0)

Well, Arnold vetoed AB 241, the anti-puppy mill bill that wouldn't allow someone to have more than 50 unaltered animals.  He is the only governor to veto such a bill that has passed in at least six other states.  California isn't as compassionate as these other states?  Arnold also thinks it's OK if animal abusers are allowed to possess more animals, and that people sell animals on the roadside or any other place for that matter.

The bright side is that he signed into law the bill that he originally mocked, SB 135, which bans docking the tails of dairy cows.  He also passed SB 318 that allows for forfeiture of property connected with dogfighting, and AB 242, which increases penalties for being a spectator at a dogfight.

So I guess I will just appreciate those for now, but it is heartbreaking after all the hard work put into getting these bills passed into law, and one person, for reasons unknown, decides to take the side of cruelty.

I'm thrilled to see how far we've come and then so disappointed when I realize how far we have to go.  But I am hopeful we will get there!

Thanks for listening.  If you want to vent your frustrations out over the pro-puppy mill decision our governor has made, then please come join us tomorrow, Saturday, October 17th (& every Saturday as long as we have to) at The Aquarium & Pet Center at 826 Wilshire Blvd. in Santa Monica, where investigations have proven they get their dogs from the Hunte Corporation, a  puppy mill broker.  We'll be there from 1 PM-3 PM.  We were met with hostility and BB bullets last week, as reported on in this KTLA piece by the wonderful Lu Parker:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46El_8jhOjo

Don't let that scare you though!  We are a tough bunch and we don't back down easy when it comes to animal suffering!

I've been MIA on the Buddha Dog Blog! Please support spay/neuter with a quick phone call or two!

I am ashamed that I haven't kept up with the blog.  I have been saving all the news for my quarterly newsletters, so have not taken the time to keep up here.  The Fall Newsletter is just days away, so please check back soon for all the latest in the world of animals.  You can subscribe here.

I hoped I might be able to share a plea on behalf of the millions of healthy, life-loving animals that we kill every day, in every city in California.  Won't you please take a few seconds to call and support SB250?

Urgent action needed to stop taxes on veterinary services!

buddhadog Posted by buddhadog at 05:04 AM on January 17, 2009 Comments comments (0)

From Pam:  Most people have a hard-enough time keeping up with vet bills, and taxing vet services will make it much harder on vets, people and animals.  People shouldn't be discouraged to provide vet care!

From Marie Atake of Forte Animal Rescue:

PLEASE CROSS-POST

Say NO to taxes on veterinary services!

It will be directly harm the rescue community if it won’t be stopped. It, not only affects our own pocket, but will make more people to dump their animals on us.

This only takes literally 5 seconds because it reaches the automated survey line at the governor’s office — you can press the numbers one after the other without listening to the recording.

Dial: 916-445-2841 Then press: 1 5 1 2

What you are pressing for are:

1 for English.

5 for the veterinary tax proposal.

1 to choose that you're calling about the veterinary tax proposal.

2 to oppose the tax.

Please take a moment and take action NOW.

THANK YOU!

How I spent my summer...

buddhadog Posted by buddhadog at 02:02 AM on October 20, 2008 Comments comments (0)

This summer was crazy with fun events for the animals!

Whole Foods in Porter Ranch hosted the "Dog Days of Summer" where we raised money giving dog massages, Pam from Paw Prince Studios did portraits, and a raffle was held for the Pet Orphans of Southern CaliforniaSome lucky dogs found homes, which is the best part!!

The view from my booth at Hilton Hotel's Project Beach House   It was a wonderful afternoon on the ocean in Malibu when I gave dog massages to promote Hilton Hotels new pet-friendly policy in all their hotels.  The event was sponsored by Boost Mobile, and a good time was had by all (especially the dogs- they love the beach!  Who doesn't?).
Shug and the Buddha Dog booth at Pawsapalooza for PAWS/LA.
Shug and I had a great time meeting lots of nice people and their dogs at Pawsapalooza that benefitted PAWS/LA.  Some really cute and entertaining animal-themed movies were shown that everyone enjoyed and lots of money was raised for a good cause.  We had a booth in the midway area where there were lots of great vendors showcasing their products and services for animals.

Some beautiful kitties from the E. Valley Shelter

Maria from the Toluca Lake Farmers Market wanted to have a special day for animals where people could come find their soulmate in one of the homeless animals from the East Valley Shelter.  I am happy to say all the dogs from the day ended up getting adopted, either there or soon after.  Hopefully some of the beautiful kitties there also got adopted eventually, but unfortunately none did that day, I'm sad to say.  But if even one life was saved, it would have been more than worth it!  Maria would like to have more of these special days at the Farmers Market, so that is awesome for the animals!
Buddha Dog at Cha Ching for Cha Cha at Safari Sams One of the most unique and fun events we were a part of was Cha Ching for Cha Cha at Safari Sams.  The newly formed charity, Paws for a Cause L.A., held the event to raise money for Actors and Others for Animals.  We were a vendor among the very unique vendors that night.  All the entertainers were awesome!  The Flarowitz Sisters hosted and kept everyone cracked up.  It was my lucky night when I won an extraordinary painting by the talented Lillian Lassen in their Chinese raffle.

("Save Our Pets' History in Eternity")'s Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park 80th Anniversary Celebration.  Warren Eckstein broadcasted "The Pet Show" radio show from the park, there was a blessing of the animals, animal adoptions, a pet psychic and other great vendors, and lots of great raffle prizes.  I was so touched by the memorials left by people to honor their beloved furry family members.   Shug at the Buddha Dog booth at the beautiful L.A. Councilmember Tony Cárdenas First Annual Pet Care Fair wrap-up

buddhadog Posted by buddhadog at 11:42 PM on May 24, 2008 Comments comments (0)

Today was the First Annual Pet Care Fair presented by City Councilmember Tony Cárdenas (Council District 6) and Senator Alex Padilla.  There were lots of beautiful adoptable animals from L.A. Animal Services, Pet Orphans Fund, and Linda Blair's WorldHeart Foundation.  We were really worried about the weather since showers were in the forecast, but though we had a few windy and cold moments, we escaped the wet stuff!  We even saw the sun a handful of times!  But despite the weather worry, we had an excellent turnout in Woodley Park.  It was awesome to see the lines for free spay/neuter in the morning and for the free microchips knowing that precious lives will be saved!

Like usual, I met many people who had never heard of animal massage.  I just love spreading the word about animal massage!  I gave away all the "Massaging your Animal" booklets I brought, and went through all my brochures, so I'm hoping lots of deserving animals got massages when they got home!

Of course, all the animals were SO adorable and hilarious to watch.  There were mostly dogs, but a few cats in carriers, and even a boa constrictor!  I massaged many sweet dogs, and had a drawing for an animal massage gift certificate.

Shug, my partner and sweetheart, had a great time at the fair!

The big guest was the Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan.  I loved what he said about Pit Bulls (he speaks so lovingly of his Pit Bull, Daddy, who is 13 now), and the importance of spaying and neutering.

Daddy

Cesar was really great to everyone.  He gave away lots of DVDs and stayed for a long time to take pictures with people and sign autographs.  The crowd loved him!  Cesar was kind enough to give shelter workers and volunteers a free seminar years ago that I was able to benefit from.  He really opened my eyes as to how very important exercise and stimulation are for the well-being of dogs.

Cesar and his wife Ilusion founded their own foundation to aid and support the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of abused and abandoned dogs.

The Cesar and Ilusion Millan Foundation has committed to being a part of the solution through the promotion of spaying and neutering. If animals can't breed, they don't produce offspring that end up in shelters only to be euthanized.

The Foundation has created a campaign that rescue organizations, veterinary clinics, spay/neuter programs, humane education programs, and schools can use to educate their communities on the importance of spaying and neutering. The campaign includes posters, t-shirts, & postcards.

To be considered for the program, you can complete their application form. The Cesar and Ilusion Millan Foundation will review the information and contact you regarding your eligibility. They will accommodate as many requests as they can, but applying does not guarantee inclusion in the program. Priority will be given to those groups that currently offer free or low cost spay and neutering in their communities.

The wonderful Linda Blair was also there with her WorldHeart Foundation
and she shared her wisdom with the crowd.  Linda has always been a champion for my beloved Pit Bulls, and for that I am forever grateful.
Linda is having an emergency fundraising party on June 8th in Beverly Hills (shoot!  I'll be out-of-town ) from 3-7 PM where she'll showcase her rescued animal photo collection.  It will be an intimate party with celebs, music, silent auctions, and more!  Linda does so much for animals, and is always in dire need of funds for medical care because she takes in so many animals in desperate need of saving.  She rescued lots of Katrina dogs, and had to deal with the expense of heartworm treatment for those that tested positive, which was most, if not all. Unfortunately after much treatment and nurturing from Linda and the wonderful volunteers at the foundation, she has lost two of her Katrina survivors due to cancer, which seems to be an epidemic from Katrina.  She still has some beautiful, healthy Katrina survivors that need loving homes, so please adopt from, donate to, or volunteer for her awesome WorldHeart Foundation- you'll be so glad you did!

My highlight might have been receiving this certificate of appreciation from the city of Los Angeles from Councilmember Tony Cárdenas who is so awesome to put on this Pet Care Fair to raise awareness of responsible guardianship.  He promises this will be an annual event which is AWESOME for the city's animals!  Check out his "Pack Leader" shirt from Cesar!

The dog I was massaging that I'm holding onto is sweet Ginger, whose Mom is the incredible Eileen Smulson who started Operation Blankets of Love, where much-needed blankets are donated by generous, caring people for shelter animals that appreciate them so much.  Here is Eileen's blog where you can find out how you can help:  http://dogcomfort.blogspot.com/.
Check out this great article in the Daily News about Eileen:  http://www.dailynews.com/ci_8424056

(From L.A. Animal Services):
You can help by collecting and donating clean, old & new blankets and towels for shelter animals waiting to be adopted by loving homes!

A study by the Compassion Action Institute in New York shows that shelter animals that are given blankets, sheets, and comforters to rest on are more able to relax and get comfortable in their new surroundings while they are waiting to be adopted. Potential adopters are more drawn to animals that appear relaxed and friendly, snuggled on a soft bed which helps to create a more home-like setting. The simple addition of a blanket or comforter to a shelter animal?s environment is proven to lead to increased adoptions.

FREE Animal Massage Demonstration at the Monrovia Library on April 16th from 3-5 PM!

buddhadog Posted by buddhadog at 06:43 PM on April 03, 2008 Comments comments (0)
Please come join me and the very charming Shug for a FREE Pet Massage Demonstration in Monrovia, CA on Wednesday, April 16th from 3-5 PM!

Wednesday, April 16th
3 PM- 5 PM

Mary Wilcox Youth Center
(temporary Monrovia Library location)

843 E. Olive Ave.
Monrovia, CA 91016
(east of Pasadena)

National Library Week goes to the dogs! Come learn how to help deepen your bond with your loving companions while helping to relieve pain, stiffness, stress, and so much more.  Stretch out and increase the flexibility of your loyal best friend.  Hey, dogs get stressed too!

As one of the special events planned for National Library Week, Carol from the Monrovia Public Library thought a pet massage demonstration would not only raise awareness for alternative health care for pets, but just raise awareness for the good treatment of animals in general, and I couldn?t agree more!

The Mary Wilcox Youth Center at 843 E. Olive Avenue, in the southeast corner of Recreation Park (in Monrovia, CA, east of Pasadena-here?s a map), is serving as the temporary Library while a new 28,000-square-foot facility is built in Library Park ? slated for completion and opening in the spring of 2009.

I am really looking forward to it!  Hope lots of animal-loving people can make it (including you)!
